Backing up files to an external hard drive using backup up software
Advantages
The backup is setup before hand so you don't have to keep selecting
the files. The program can be scheduled to back up at any time you
schedule. You can designate what you want backed up. The drive is
portable.
Disadvantages
Be easy to forget to verify the backup was done correctly. However
if you have good backup software, this shouldn't be an issue.
